Common weakness to avoid: projects that stay purely theoretical, proposing an educational approach without any applied component or evidence of how it would actually work in practice. Education capstones are usually strongest when they combine research grounding with a genuinely applied, testable element.

Healthcare and Nursing Capstone Examples

Healthcare capstones frequently take the form of an evidence-based practice project, addressing a specific clinical question using a structured framework such as PICOT, or a quality improvement project targeting a defined process issue in a clinical setting.

A strong example: an evidence-based practice project examining whether a specific nurse-led intervention reduces hospital readmission rates for a defined patient population, grounded in a structured literature review and, where possible, a small-scale applied component.

Common weakness to avoid: questions that are too broad to answer within the scope of a single capstone, such as "how can nursing care be improved for elderly patients" rather than a specific, measurable intervention applied to a defined population. Engineering Capstone Examples

Engineering capstones typically centre on designing, building, and testing a solution to a specific technical problem, often working within real-world constraints such as budget, materials, or regulatory requirements.

A strong example: designing and prototyping a low-cost water filtration system for a specific rural context, including material selection justified by cost and availability constraints, and testing results against a defined performance standard.

Common weakness to avoid: designs that are not tested or validated against any concrete standard, leaving the project as a proposal rather than a demonstrated, evaluated solution.

What Strong Capstones Across All Fields Have in Common

Looking across these examples, a few patterns hold regardless of discipline:

A specific, well-scoped question or problem, not a broad topic area. The strongest capstones could not be easily summarised as "a project about X" - they answer a specific question about X.

An applied or testable component, not purely theoretical discussion. Even research-heavy capstones tend to be stronger when they include some element of application, testing, or original data, rather than synthesising existing literature alone.

Realistic scope for the time available. The most common reason capstones run into trouble partway through is a scope that would genuinely require far more time or resources than a single term or semester allows.

Clear evaluation criteria decided in advance. Strong capstones define, early on, how success will be measured - whether that is a testing benchmark, an assessment outcome, a specific improvement metric, or committee evaluation criteria - rather than deciding this after the work is already done.

If you are choosing a topic, try describing your idea in one sentence using the pattern: "This project will [do something specific] for [a defined context or population], evaluated by [a specific measure]." If you cannot fill in all three parts specifically, your topic is likely still too broad to plan effectively.
